National Science Week at The National Maritime Museum (free events)
Interactive events, exhibitions, screenings, talks and experiments will be held at The National Maritime Museum this National Science Week.
Students are invited to meet ocean scientists in a virtual excursions or face-to-face speaker sessions. Hear about how scientific knowledge can be applied to solve problems and innovate in ocean research, explore STEM career journeys and be inspired by those at the forefront of scientific exploration.
Students will also get the chance to explore the museum’s exhibitions and go on board HMAS Vampire as a part of their visit. Suitable for Year groups: 9, 10, 11,12.

Sydney Science Trail
Presented by the Australian Museum and Botanic Gardens of Australia, the Sydney Science Trail offers an engaging, hands-on program of full-day excursions for primary and secondary students in Stages 2 - 6, helping them to discover the important role science plays in our lives.
Sydney Science Trail will ignite curiosity and spark wonder in your students. The excursion program includes interactive STEM workshops, tours, live shows and panel discussions led by research scientists. Indigenous Science Experience at Redfern
When and where: Saturday 9 Aug, 10:00am - 3:00pm (AEST), Redfern Community Centre
What: Find out more about Aboriginal astronomy, how is our native flora used in bush medicine, what can we learn about sustainable living from 60 000+ years of Indigenous culture, at the Indigenous Science Experience at the Redfern Community Centre.
There will be a diverse range of interactive science activities accessible to all ages.
- Yarning with Elders on bush foods and medicines
- Learning about customarily used seaweeds for environmental sustainability
- Indigenous astronomy
- Cultural performances connecting to the natural world
- Weaving
- Torres Strait Islander virtual reality
- Physics and chemistry activities
Opportunities to meet Indigenous Elders and student leaders from the National Indigenous Science Education Program who will be assisting in activity demonstrations.
The event will begin with a traditional smoking ceremony and official welcome (10 am). There will also be the opportunity to buy food and Aboriginal arts and crafts.

A multi-day community event bringing together scientists, cultural knowledge holders, artists, architects, ecologists, and academics for engaging talks, exhibitions, and hands-on workshops. Celebrating a decade of programming, ERTHWRX25 will present a 10-year retrospective of Science, Arts & Cultural initiatives that have explored regional environmental knowledge systems through both Indigenous and Western scientific perspectives. 2025 Marie Curie Lectures – From Quantum Past to Quantum Future with Dr Sol H Jacobsen and Dr Danielle Holmes
When and where: Thursday 7 Aug , 6:00pm - 7:30pm (AEST), University of Wollongong Science Space.
What: This public lecture is part of the Australian Institute of Physics's 2025 Marie Curie Lecture Series presented by Dr Sol Jacobsen and Dr Danielle Holmes. Dr. Sol Jacobsen is Group Leader at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology, where she investigates ways to use the quantum property of spin in future technological devices. Dr Danielle Holmes is a Postdoctoral researcher and Lecturer at the University of New South Wales, where she makes ‘qubits’ using individual atoms in silicon chips, the building blocks of quantum computers which promise to revolutionise humanity’s problem-solving abilities.
