The Young Scientist competition celebrates the scientific investigations and technological innovations of K–12 students across New South Wales. Now in its 33rd year, the competition provides a valuable opportunity for students to gain state-level recognition for their work, with the potential to progress to the national level at the ASTA iCubed Awards.
This year, there are $20,000 worth of awards and prizes, contributed by program sponsors, for students to win. Parents or teachers can submit students’ projects via the Young Scientist website (https://youngscientist.au/) for their chance to be celebrated.

Become a Young Scientist Judge
We are on the hunt for Young Scientist Judges. Being a judge is an excellent experience, offering insights on judging processes, ideas for scientific investigations and a way to become part of a community of like-minded teachers.
Completing Young Scientist Assessor Training or Young Scientist Judging can contribute to teacher’s elective Professional Development hours addressing the following Australian Professional Standards for Teachers towards maintaining Proficient Teacher Accreditation in NSW:
- 5.3.2 Understand and participate in assessment moderation activities to support consistent and comparable judgements of student learning.
- 6.3.2 Contribute to collegial discussions and apply constructive feedback from colleagues to improve professional knowledge and practice.
- 7.4.2 Participate in professional and community networks and forums to broaden knowledge and improve practice.
You may nominate to judge Science and/or Technology, and Primary and/or Secondary. The disciplines for Years 7-12 Scientific Investigations are judged separately (Biology, Chemistry, Physics, and Earth and Environmental Science.)
