Professional Development & Presentation Opportunities

The latest updates regarding STANSW's 2025 events.

After a successful start to the year with Meet The Markers virtual sessions attended by over 700 teachers, STANSW is excited to offer a versatile calendar of online and face to face professional development and networking opportunities for teachers.

2025 STANSW K-10 Conference: Igniting Scientific Skills.

  • When: Monday, 23 June 2025
  • Where: Macquarie University
  • What: Empowering Educators to develop scientific skills in K-10 students.
  • Featured Keynote: Prof. Nathan Hart (Macquarie University) on comparative neurophysiology, enriching educators' understanding of scientific inquiry.

This professional development conference equips K-10 science educators with practical strategies and innovative tools to enhance student scientific skill development. Sessions focus on building teacher capacity in areas such as practical investigations (wet & dry labs), data science integration, AI in science education, and curriculum-aligned skills mapping across stages. Participants will learn to effectively implement these techniques to foster working, thinking, and questioning scientifically in their students. Registration is now open here.

Presentation Opportunities:

We invite passionate and knowledgeable secondary science educators to submit workshop proposals for the Term 3 Secondary Science Teachers Conference: Change Agents: Inspiring Science Education (CAISE), by submitting a presentation form here.

Taking place on 11 August 2025, this dynamic event is designed for all secondary science teachers, from Stage 4 to Stage 6, looking to invigorate their teaching practices and inspire the next generation of scientists. It’s an opportunity for secondary science teachers to dive into hands-on workshops, explore cutting-edge pedagogical approaches, and connect with fellow educators.

We are seeking workshops that address the following key areas:

  • Practical Investigation in a wet lab (St4/5): Hands-on activities and techniques.
  • Simple machines reimagined (phoenixing) (forces FA) (St4/5): Innovative approaches to teaching forces.
  • Creating wet mount slides, staining and preparing for view (cells FA) (St4/5): Practical skills for biology.
  • Using data loggers to extract and analyse investigation data (DoE Sci LK/MK) (St5/6): Data analysis techniques.
  • Agar plate aseptic techniques (disease FA) (St5/6): Microbiology skills.
  • Titration competition Chem (St6): Engaging chemistry activities.
  • POEO model (DoE Sci Team) (St4/5): Effective teaching models.
  • Designing better depth studies (St4/5): Strategies for designing impactful studies.
  • Effective integration and connection of ATSI content through each focus area (St5/6): Inclusive teaching practices.
  • Scientific argumentation (St5/6): Developing critical thinking skills.
  • How to run INVESTIGATIONS in the time poor St6 timelines (St6): Time management strategies.
  • Observing/Questioning rising up from St1-3 (St4/5): Building foundational skills.
  • Problem solving, starting the trajectory for future stages (St4/5): Developing problem solving skills.
  • Planning and conducting investigations in prep for St6 (St5/6): Preparing students for advanced studies.
  • Developing communicating across St4-6 (St6): Enhancing scientific communication.
  • Periodic table data and dataset (PT FA) (St4/5): Exploring the periodic table.
  • Concept of energy across domains (DoE Sci CB) (St4/5): Understanding energy concepts.
  • Data science 2 FA – how to use a spreadsheet for analysis (St5/6): Advanced data analysis.
  • Organic chemistry in St5 Materials FA (St5/6): Integrating organic chemistry.
  • Culmination of St4-St5 into Science Extension, how INV supports the other St6 subjects and SciX continues this support (St6): Connecting curriculum across stages.

Let us know what you'd like to see at the Virtual Conference.

The STANSW will be hosting a Virtual Conference, providing an opportunity for regional teachers to engage in peer to peer learning and present or attend sessions from all over NSW. Let us know what you'd like to see at the STANSW Virtual Conference (Term 4) by submitting a feedback form here.
